The Threepenny Opera

This boisterous production has Brecht meet Cabaret. Brecht purists will hate it, but the audiences are loving it. Thomas Kohut shines as the Balladeer, linking scenes sinuously and evoking the squalor which otherwise the production lacks. The dirt has been exchanged for Broadway glitz. The show is choreographed beyond some of the cast’s capability and makes several scenes cluttered. Rob Heaps has potential as Mac, but pushes too hard to be charismatic and sexy – he should relax and let his looks and voice do it for him. Less would be much more. The acting is mixed, with some very dodgy, over-indulgent characterisations. Don’t go expecting standard Brecht but indulge in the fun and enjoy the energy of this young student group.
