The Lights

"This city is what it is because our citizens are what they are" The Lights is a dark journey through an unnamed American city whose structure and society is crumbling. Over 24 hours, on seemingly lawless streets, a young couple encounter myraid faces of the city, from the pavement to the penthouse.

Written by Howard Korder, a Pulitzer Prize nominee who is best known for his screenwriting (HBO's Boardwalk Empire). Directed by Hamish Macdougall (Tennessee Williams' world premiere I Never Get Dressed Till After Dark On Sundays). This is the first professional UK revival of The Lights since its original 1996 production at The Royal Court.

Placed in the heart of Vauxhall at The Spring, this warehouse-cum-performance space is the ideal location for The Lights, with an urban and gritty tale; giving an epic feel to the episodic structure on the play. Brilliantly inventive by Hamish Macdougall with beautifully observed narrative scene changes linking high octane episodes, delivered by a well-tuned and deeply impressive ensemble. The show has now ended but I would check out the company and the director for what may come next.
