What a good evening ... Samantha Womack as a delightful Nellie, Jason Howard s a swarthy (44 year old?!) Emile and Loretta Ables Sayre as a totally credible Bloody Mary give us a show with gusto and verve ... and the south Pacific cocktail bar in the foyer helped too!
I think I'd forgotten just how many good songs there are in this show, in fact every number was one I wanted to sing along to, every one except one that is. The songs from South Pacific have become a part of the repertoire of many singers and are more usually heard out of context (in a concert or on the radio) than they are heard in the show ... but one song gets passed by, the song that carries the nub of the story, You've Got To Be Carefully Taught. Whilst superficially South Pacific is a story or frustrated sailors on remote islands in war time the underlying theme is one of the effects of prejudice on society.
This is a long show but completely engaging and very enjoyable ... catch it if you can
