Ambition or jealousy may lead to the handing over of
The King s Theatre in Glasgow into private hands. Local politicians are said to be fed up with rival Edinburgh venues attracting all the tours of major West End musicals. Local Government ‘Best Value guidelines have led the City Council s working group to draw up plans for private finance and management to be brought in. Apparently the council is determined to keep overall control of the venue but wants to run it in partnership with a private company. Small budget touring shows and amateur productions are blamed for poor audience figures and an annual cost to the council of approximately £150,000. Almost as much as can be lost on one major musical.
