Strictly Come Dancing has made stars out of a number of dancers and armchair dance experts of us all, so I was really looking forward to seeing this show and enjoying the dancing for its own sake outside a competition environment. Of course, Vincent and Flavia were already stars in the competitive dance world before they stopped competition and went on TV but they have since become familiar to us all. It is this familiarity, of course, which allows a show such as Midnight Tangl to tour to large venues, and even take up a West End residency for a while ... tango shows often tour, but rarely to the larger venues as the audience appeal is just not there without recognisable names - which is almost a shame when you see the hugely talented group in this show, all of whom could wow an audience on their own.
So what of this show? Well, although a tango dance evening the show does have a "story", albeit a somewhat small one (well, at least as big as some ballet's get away with!) - basically biy meets girl, girl taken by rival, boy beats rival, girl returns ... well, along those lines ;-) This could have been a bit trite except for (1) the staging is lovely, (2) the comedy double act are terrific, (3) the band and singer on stage are great, (4) you just gotta love the costumes, and (5) the dancing is, frankly, superb! This isn't a long show, but it is a fabulous one - Flavia and Vincent are brilliant and give a spectacular display of why the Argentinian Tango is so powerful a dance.
This is a great night out with an entire troupe of fantastic dancers ... I for one would happily go see it again ..... and again
