Is a production of Marat/Sade by Peter Weiss still valid today? Probably, but this is not it. The production aims for period realism, but is too safe and comfortable. There are powerful images and strong moments created by the University of Sussex Drama Society, but the director has not drilled the cast to ensure their intention feeds their energy to drive the pace. Some use of sound could have unsettled the audience, but the lunatics keep respectful silence through uninspiring dialogue. This is an opportunity missed – by playing safe, Marat/Sade fails to spark emotions in the audience or the cast.
