This play is an incredibly hard watch ... the characters, with the exception of the daughter, are irredeemably nasty, the main plot depicts a vile side of humanity and the treatment of the daughter, by Joe in particular, is almost unwatachable in its cruelty. having said that, it is a black comedy (with the emphass on the dark side) and has flashes of lightness in amongst the nastiness though for me the end point of the play simply doesn't ring true.
But this is a great production of a play that in some ways I wish I could un-see. The performances are universally brilliant, setting and staging is compelling and the overall commitment to the production faultless - I just can't help wondering if it is a story I needed to know ....
