What a glorious evening in the wonderful grounds of Clovelly Court. Much more concert tahn "musical", this re-telling of the myth of Hero and Leander, their love, their conflict with the will of the gods and their ultimate deaths, is a real delight. Greek myths are fascinating and dark, their gods are vengeful and often cruel, but this is a genuinely accessible and enjoyable interpretation.
The show, which lasts just under an hour, is told in songs in a wide range of styles - a particular favourite being Neptune's sea shanties which carried both joy at being a free spirit and the sadness of failing to prevent the tragedy (spoiler?!). The six musicians master each of the styles well, providing backing vocals to the main pair of singers who are Hero (Sian Keen) and Leander (Jack Dean) and, indeed, any and all other required characters!
Performances are confident and professional and they sang on after the show when we were clearing away. Sian, in particular, has a great voice for this show and really engages the audience - despite them being widely spread across the lawns!
A really good show and a most enjoyable evening
