This is a lively production of an ageing musical. The chorus work is strong but the solo singers lack the power to carry their songs. The director has not made best use of the cast or venue, at many points the cast come into the audience, walk to the back, then return. Its odd that when they have taken care to costume in period that several boys have boxer shorts showing above their jeans – especially for the singer with the line “ain’t got no underwear”! And mooning really is pointless if you drop your jeans but not your boxers… The famous nude protest does not feature. The show does come together in the big numbers and rallies to a lively finale.
