Described as "The Collected Lyrics (1954-1981) of Stephen Sondheim with attendant comments, principles, heresies, grudges, whines and anecdotes" this 440 odd page hardback is a mine of information.

Each show, from Saturday Night to Merrily We Roll Along gets a full introduction with background details followed by the complete lyrics with extensive footnotes, explanations, photos and even facsimilies of original manuscript. The footnotes are fascinating, giving us an insight into why the lyrics are as they are, why the word choices are so specific and how the arguments ran when first performed.
