Dark Horse Indiana

A provocative new play which transmutes the law of Indiana so that heterosexuality is a criminal offence, punishable by death, while procreation is by scientists. This retake on 1984 has many challenging ideas, but needs editing and certainly needs more pace and rhythm in the playing. The shape of the production is uniform, so there is only a slight build of tension to the climax. It is well played by a strong cast, but much flow is lost through unnecessary moving of the black boxes which comprise the set. Eric Barry impresses in a part which fizzles out towards the end – a waste of his earlier work. As the playwright, he needs to develop the structure and establish the characters of the governor and reporter more fully early on to give focus to the pertinence of the issues.
