Zuloo Productions have a hit! The engaging vitality of this production is a delight. The simple staging suits the production, from spin the bottle, through introductions and costume changes on stage to the final crucifixion. The play is an imagination of the Gospels re-sited to Corpus Christi, USA. The cross-gender casting and anachronisms allow you to forget its origins. The fact that Joshua may be gay is not an issue – the theme is love for all mankind. The whole cast is excellent in playing the multiple roles required (including a bearded virgin mother!). They may sometimes go over the top, but it is knowingly done, and quickly reined back. Ayman Oghanna plays Joshua convincingly from birth to death and grows in power on that journey. This is a confident, quality production with many unexpected laughs. Give the stand-ups a rest and go to this uplifting play instead!
