I was searching for one word to describe Birthmarks: clever, surreal, sexy, funny, provocative, inclusive, damning... but they don't do it justice. Take one gay ex-jehovah's witness, a whale, a zebra, a band, make it semi-autobiographical, fill it with great songs by Brook Tate and you still have no idea. It starts as a religious meeting, then Brook reveals he has been dis-fellowshipped- thrown off a ship and out of his religion and the story just gets less likely and more intriguing. The band are great, so it's worth going for the music and Brook's delicious voice. The storytelling is exceptional, so go for that. The whale is fantastic, so go for her. Just go. The one word is: fabulous!
