First let me say that the songs in this show are fabulous, oarticularly to those "of a certain age", as much of the audience (including me) was ... memories abounded and pretty well every number was able to make me smile.
Despite that, and some great voices, the show just didn' t grab me. Carol's potted life story seemed crammed into the gaps and was often rushed - although called a musical it felt more like a play with music - the songs interrupted the flow of the story rather than moving it forward.
For me, the dance routines lacked some of the precision I remember from those days and the amplification was too harsh for the solos and too underplayed for the groups leaving them struggling to come over the band.
Given how important most of these songs are to an audience like this I would have preferred accurate "tribute" renditions rather than interpretations ... but that may be a personal thing.
If you love the music of Carol King you will enjoy this show - buy and read the programme, the timeline in there is fascinating! It was just a bit lacking in focus for me.
