Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without seeing a few "A Christmas Carol" versions, personally I always make sure I catch the Alistair Sim and Muppets versions but I am always happy to see more and, indeed, had already seen two film versions (on the same day) just a couple of days before Press Night here.
Firstly, let me just say, I LOVED IT!
This is a play with music with the actor musicians taking on multiple roles. Funny, fast, with some modern references and audience involvement but retaining all the important moments and lines that we all love so much. There is also a lot of signing involved, integral to the plot rather than tacked on, with one scene almost entirely signed and interpreted through narration - turning the usual signing scenario on its head.
Felix Hayes is a marvelous Scrooge, if a little robust and healthy! He has a marvelous voice and a really engaging presence that carries the central character well. He is surrounded by a very talented ensemble who create all the characters, move the scenery, shape the play and provide much of te humour and pathos. It is amazing that, correctly pitched, ths story we all know so well can still raise a tear.
I was thoroughly absorbed in the evening, completely entertained, thrilled and surprised. This is a genuinely great production thatI shall remember for many years. Thank you ...
