Like many traditional customs, Mummers were originally enactors of ritual. Ritual plays have been done in most areas of the country and in many contexts. They have in common the theme of death and regeneration, indicating that they began as reassurance to primitive people that the cycle of the seasons on which their livelihood depended would continue. Paul Murray will lead this weekend workshop in which participants will find out more about a fascinating, early form of theatre, as they create their own Mummers play for the Christmas season.
