Former Poet Laureate. Andrew Motion, Poet Laureate (1999-09), introduces his latest book Laurels and Donkeys (Clutag Press), a collection of war poems presenting scenes from various conflicts of the 20th & 21st centuries - from the First World War to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They evoke both shock at what Wilfred Owen called ‘the pity of war’ and dismay at its recurrence. Sir Andrew also reads from The Cinder Path (Faber) shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry, his collection of essays Ways of Life: On Places, Painters and Poets, his autobiography In The Blood - A Memoir of My Childhood and answers questions about his writing and the role of Poet Laureate.
