What's to be Done with Algernon?

Work:: What's to be Done with Algernon? (S5525)

Michael Allen's first play based on the strange and scandalous life of Victorian poet Algernon Swinburne. Victorian poet Algernon Swinburne was outraging society even before Oscar Wilde. His fame as a poet of genius did not stop him from cultivating a reputation for debauchery, and he was a regular visitor at various London whipping brothels, thereby laying himself open to blackmail. In this remarkable new play, the story of Swinburne's life is revealed by three of his most intimate acquaintances: Benjamin Jowett, Master of Balliol College, Oxford; Theodore Watts-Dunton, a London solicitor; and Mrs Doris Addams, a St. John's Wood brothel-keeper. Each has a story to tell and together they build a moving and sometimes comic portrait of one of England's most colourful literary figures.
