Toast

Originally produced as part of the Theatre Machine's New Writing Workshops, 1997. It's 1975; the Sunday night shift in a Yorkshire bread factory. Seven men come together to bake enough bread to feed the entire population of Hull. It's just another Sunday. Nellie's so worn down from a lifetime of bread making he loses his vest in the dough; the First Over Man's on a promise; the oven's are cranked up and the wholemeal is pleasingly large going in . But there's a spanner in the works which threatens bread production in Hull for good and life as they know it for the men on the shift.
