The Villains' Opera archiveBehind the cover of his South London pub, Peachum plies a successful trade in small-time scams. But his world is shattered when the charismatic villain, Macheath, not only plans to marry his daughter, Polly, but to move into a more dangerous level of activity. John Gay's ground-breaking conception of The Beggar's Opera has been updated to a contemporary London teeming with petty thieves, gangland hoods, drug barons, bent coppers and corrupt politician or two.
