The Theft of Sita
Work:: The Theft of Sita (S970533626)
Based on the 2000 year-old Sanskrit story of the Ramayana in which Lord Rama's beautiful bride Sita is stolen by the wicked demon Rawanna. In this version Sita, a symbol of the natural world, is held captive by Rawanna in the form of a corrupt business-man in Lanka, an urban nightmare of skyscrapers and slums. Rama's celebrated exploits en route to Sita's rescue pit him against the evils of environmental destruction and corporate greed. A kaleidoscopic production brings the story to life with a contemporary Indonesian resonance, set, as it is, against the overthrow of the Suharto regime, blending two geographically close but politically distant cultures, the ancient and the modern, the political and the mythical, the spiritual with brutal realities.
