The Tale of Reverend John Prince

Work:: The Tale of Reverend John Prince (S153604514)

The Tale of Reverend John Prince, is set in 1699, and is about the then vicar of Berry Pomeroy., a small village near Totnes. John Prince is a local historical figure, better known for his book on famous residents of Devon: The Worthies Of Devon, published in 1701, which a plaque in Berry Pomeroy Church commemorates, to this day. Less well known is what took place two years before the publication of his book, when the Reverend had been seen in an apparently compromising situation, with a local woman, at a Totnes alehouse, close to the Royal Seven Stars in the town centre. The Tale Of Reverend John Prince is a play based upon the scandal, and being at once humorous, daring and entertaining, involving the portrayal of a motley collection of local characters of the time, and is based upon the surviving witness testimonies. In real life, the scandal did not end there, Reverend Prince was indeed removed from his post, for a time, until regaining it upon a legal technicality, and it is believed that while he was not entirely innocent, his actions had been exaggerated for local political reasons.
