General Sir Edward Rathbone, approaching seventy and now retired, lives in the country with his wife Sybil and his ex-batman William Clarke. A young captain in 1916, he fought at the battle of the Somme. Now he is living a quiet life and writing his memoirs. And then one day he is visited by a man who was under his command at the Somme, an ordinary private soldier, the name of George Painter.
