The Lodger archiveA black comedy about life, love and theatre inspired by Ivor Novello. 1953, in a run-down London boarding house, Rhys is an out of work chorus boy whose court case comes up tomorrow. The theatre had been his way of escaping from the drab, ration-book post-war world, and for years Rhys had revelled in the escapist romance and colour of Ivor Novello's musicals. Two years after Ivor's premature death in 1951, out of work and with Ivor out of fashion, Rhys has no protection from the 'real' world, or the Home Secretary's campaign against gays which has already claimed one of the theatre's brightest stars, Sir John Gielgud.
