A team of scientists set out to define and pin down the human psyche with their brand new and somewhat temperamental machine that is able, so they say, to answer the human dilemma. Hasn't science always been an attempt to explain the world in which we live, so that we can find for ourselves our own place within it? Unfortunately for these scientists, their subject is a philandering doctor, who is also researching the same subject. Written in the year of the Prague Spring, before the bloody Soviet repression, there is an air of mischief to Havel's play that falls somewhere between a surreal bedroom farce and an existential enquiry, set in a realm where, with nothing to refer to for self-orientation, time itself is as changeable as the human emotions under examination.
