The ICA Economist Debate: Future of the Right
Work:: The ICA Economist Debate: Future of the Right (S236772303)
The 'era of the social democrats' across Europe appears to be over, and the right-left paradigm is undergoing a major shift. New Labour stands accused of moving beyond the centre to the right, but the Tories are performing more dramatic contortions. A leader elected from the right is going soft on social policy: can he sell this to his party? Is it a major change in thinking and ideology, or just opportunistic rebranding? How can the Tories marry their traditional small-state agenda with a concern for public services, which matter most to voters? And what of entrenched divisions over Europe? Speakers include: Peter Hitchens, columnist at the Mail on Sunday ; Francis Maude, Shadow Foreign Secretary; Shailesh Vara, Tory vice-chairman; and Sheila Lawlor, director of the think-tank, Politeia. Emma Duncan, Britain Editor at the Economist will be in the chair.
