The Glass Ceiling archiveAldous Brink is a writer of romantic fiction who began his career with romantic ideas of high literature. Having retreated to a glass house in Lancashire with his companion Rebecca, his only link to the world he writes about is his son Gabriel. Gabriel's birth and his mother's death were marked by a comet. Now it is time for the comet to return, bringing with it a sequence of events that serve to turn their world inside out. Gabriel returns to celebrate the event with his new girlfriend Sally who turns out to be far closer to him than he ever expected. One family unit is about to be destroyed and another created. Richard Davidson's surprisingly funny play deals with the mechanics of a family and how painful memories can be buried deep within the fabric. A sparse and emotive piece, it is the character of Aldous that provides the play with its central substance - he is a difficult man dealing with his mistakes both professional and personal.
