The year is 1926; a shell-shocked band of ex-servicemen tramp in search of an old friend, the vicar Calvin. Their journey brings them from the North to Suffolk, where they fall foul of the local worthies, the church and the pettiness of village life. A touching and powerful story of faith and conscience set against the background of the General Strike and men hell-driven in a 'land fit for heroes'.
