The Face of Everything archiveThrough his innovative method of manual animation, he uses an overhead projector to animate hundreds of original drawings by hand onto a film screen depicting the story of Hillbilly, an impressionable gay teenager. The story begins with Hillbilly's departure from the family farm to the big city dazzle of Las Vegas, where he is immediately "picked out, shook up, turned around, and made into someone new" by flamboyant nightclub entertainer Devo Valentino. Hillbilly's whirlwind relationship with Devo takes him to intoxicating heights of celebrity, luxury, and infatuation, at the expense of his integrity and sense of self. An addiction to his acne medication sends Hillbilly into a romantic depression, in which he begins to discover the confluence of beauty and sadness and his own developing artistic voice. A dramatic confrontation over a plastic surgery double date with Devo marks the beginning of Hillbilly's eventual path to liberation.
