The Early Hours of a Reviled Man archiveFirst performed on Radio 3. Characteristic of Barker's style 'The Early Hours' reveals why it is not enough to simply reject racism. If we can bear to see how racism may be persuasive, seductive and powerful then we can articulate a response to it. If the artist is celebrated for the liberation of the creative impulse, how do we respond if this artistic freedom accompanied by uncensored attitudes which are abhorrent? What if these are the attitudes that 'cultured' society is active in attempting to deconstruct? In fulfilling obscene desires the play examines how unfettered hatred inspires both repugnance and a despairing adoration.
