The Crimson Corset is set prior to the outbreak of the First World War, in the midst of the Votes for Women campaign. Set in London and Epsom - near to writer Morag Thorpe's hometown - the play is both comical and moving, with a dramatic climax set at the 1913 Derby. Against this historical background, the play follows the fortunes of Crimson, a wealthy girl pursued by Sir Hubert Haverton-Smythe. He is an aristocrat and sexual predator with a predilection for the tight-lacing of ladies. But Sir Hubert takes his obsession for corsets far beyond the fashionable... Examining Edwardian attitudes towards women, the play takes as its theme a famous quote from La Gene in 1868: "Half the charm in a small waist comes on account of its being tight laced...the uneasiness caused by the excessive pressure of a perfect corset gives an additional grace to the walk and movements of a graceful girl.
