Tall Phoenix

Tall Phoenix

Work:: Tall Phoenix (S1989641729)

Tall Phoenix tells the story of six different people in one city whose lives are all linked by a chain of events. Although the city in the play is never named, people from all over Britain are sure to see similarities with their own part of the country. The description of a city that rose from devastation after the Second World War and suffered mass unemployment in the 1970s and 80s could refer to any number of Britain s former industrial strongholds. It s a description that clearly resonates very deeply with the people of Coventry. Tall Phoenix questions the sense in spending millions of pounds replacing our few remaining landmark buildings with luxury modern apartments and bringing in the same multi-national chains of shops and bars as every other city in the world. Are we finally moving forward, or are we losing our identity? With further plans for regeneration being announced almost daily in Coventry, including a 10 million development of the Belgrade Theatre itself, it would seem that there has never been a more poignant time to produce a new play that tackles these issues head-on. The play explores these issues in a very human story, full of emotion and humour that follows six diverse characters who all end up playing an important part in each other s lives. With strong language throughout, scenes of a sexual nature and controversial themes, it s a play that seems certain to get people talking.
