Silence of a Dale archiveFollowing the sell-out success of Portrait of a Dale (1953) last summer - HT , Harrogate Theatre s outreach department are producing a brand new docu-drama on a subject that has resonance for us all. Silence of a Dale (2001) is the story of foot and mouth in the words of the people who lived through it. There has been very little artistic work about a crisis that has affected the entire infrastructure of rural society. This docu-drama consists entirely of source material compiled from interviews with people as diverse as farmers, butchers, landlords and vets. The play directly contrasts their story against statements made by the government, leaving the audience to draw their own conclusions. This is a real play about real people and allows everyone an opportunity to understand what went on, whether or not they were directly affected by foot and mouth.
