Shouting Stamping and Singing Home archiveThis story of life in the Deep South is told by 12-year-old Lizzie. She talks of her family, her mother and her strong-willed sister Marguerite. She learns of her great-great-grandmother, Sojourner, a slave freed one hundred years earlier. The lives of generations of women are carefully intertwined to create a powerful exploration of a hundred years of Black history. The play celebrates a rich oral tradition and this, together with the haunting beauty of the interwoven Negro spiritual, resonates throughout the piece. Suitable for ages 8+
