Shishe Ke Khilone

Work:: Shishe Ke Khilone (S1064101351)

A Hindi/Urdu adaptation of Tennessee Williams' modern classic The Glass Menagerie. In Shishe Ke Khilone, the American Depression gives way to the slums of 1960s Bombay where Sheel Verma lives in reduced circumstances with her grown up children, Rahul and Mira. In this setting, the story becomes a poignant drama of middle class Indian existence where life is lived on the edge and the dream of a Nehruvian Utopia has become tainted by lack of opportunity for the youth. Sheel Verma, who comes from a landowning family in UP has been abandoned by her husband long ago. She now inhabits a world that fluctuates between illusion and grim reality. Her extreme devotion to her children has also made her domineering and overbearing. Rahul longs to escape these shackles and the drudgery of his humdrum life, while his sister, Mira, painfully shy finds solace by retreating into the fragile world of her glass menagerie. Into this milieu arrives Raj, like a knight in shining armour. Seen as a messenger from the world of normality, the family pin all their hopes and dreams on him. But can Raj keep this fragile family intact?
