Shades of Pemberley/Black Girls Love Jane Austen Too archiveShades of Pemberley is a one act play inspired by memories of the actor Sybille Wehrli's teenage years. Blanche begins to escape her lonliness and begins to journey in her imagination to the world of cossetted, corseted 18thcentury England through the novels of Jane Austen. A world brought to life on the pages of not only the books but the films too. Gossip and romantic disappointments, alongside the triumphs of dispossessed young women of noble birth, resonates deeply with the disaffected Blanche. She finds a portal to a place where she can leave behind the routine which has become the thief of her imagination and spirit. Losing herself in a world where her own aspirations and anxieties are made flesh. Shades of Pemberley explores what it is like for a migrant family to become fractured through migration, often permanently, as a mother makes the heart-breaking decision to leave a child behind and move to another continent to provide for her family.
