In 1940, Britain is facing imminent invasion by German forces. But Churchill has come up with a splendid notion the enemy would never think of - Scallywags! Recruited on a really very hush-hush basis at the local Post Office, thousands of ordinary folk were trained as saboteurs to conceal blunt objects, make do with a hole in the ground, dot their dashes and drink rum in the face of interrogation. A dentist, boy scout, aristocrat and poacher are united in their crucial role as Britain's last line of defence. Class tensions are brushed aside, friendships formed and sacrifices made as the Scallywags come face to face with the invading troops, and all the while the sinister voice of Lord Haw-Haw spews Nazi propaganda over the airwaves. Scallywags is a new piece of devised theatre based on the little known but true story of the Auxiliary Units - highly secretive agents recruited during World War 2 to protect Britain in the event of Nazi occupation. The 'Scallywags', as they were nicknamed, worked from secret underground bases across the country, and SOOP take a lighthearted but respectful look at these brave and unacknowledged individuals.
