Riot - South Shields 1930

Work:: Riot - South Shields 1930 (S271070563)

On August 2, 1930, at Mill Dam, South Shields, normally quiet and unobtrusive Yemeni seamen rioted. Bones were broken, a police officer was stabbed, much blood was shed, and in the aftermath more than 20 Yemenis were deported from the country. What caused the riot? Who was to blame? Was it racist or economic? What does such a riot have to tell us in in the Britain of 2005? Peter Mortimer
