Read Not Dead: The Wise Woman of Hogsdon archiveHeywood's title-character is a charlatan and a bawd who has a reputation for being an 'enchantress, sorceress and she-devil'. Paradoxically, she is also a tamer of wild gallants, the rescuer of young mothers (and their illegitimate children) and the unlikely "deus-ex-machina" in this City comedy. The plot winds its way through the colourful life of Cheapside and the Exchange to its festive, if utopian, conclusion in Hogsdon (Hoxton).
