Read Not Dead: If You Know Not Me You Know Nobody (part II) archiveWith Elizabeth safely ensconced on the throne, the focus of Heywood's second play shifts to the City exploring its expansion and growing confidence during her reign. The focus of this is nominally the history of the origins of the Royal Exchange built by prominent mercer Sir Thomas Gresham to free merchants from having to conduct business in the nave of St Paul's Cathedral or rain-swept Lombard Street. The play is filled with numerous sub-plots both farcical and serious, with Gresham's generous and humane portrayal as the common thread.
