Queen of Spades and I archiveThe Queen of Spades and I tackles the life and death of Alexander Sergeevitch Pushkin, Russia's greatest poet, notorious gambler and serial womaniser. In a darkly comic narrative Pushkin confronts his own psyche in a fictional character of his own creation: the obsessive Hermann, a reluctant card-player deceived by the ghost of the old countess whose death he has caused. Hermann loses his mind, and Pushkin fails to halt the inevitable consequences that lead to his own tragic demise.
