Rembrandt; one of the world's greatest painters and one of its most inept collectors. He is broke. The bankruptcy judge wants to recover a new painting from him to settle debts, the person who commissioned the picture has paid a deposit and Rembrandt's mistress, Hendrickje, has a strong interest. The ownership is contested to the present day. If the world owes artists a living does art belong to the world? Is the power of art diminished by its being hidden from public view? We accompany the painting through 350 years to the present day to help settle these arguments and to bring peace to the couple in the frame.
