Out of the East archiveOut of the East is an extraordinary insight into the life of a western man who became fascinated with Japan and its history. Lafcadio Hearn was born in 1850 in Greece of Irish/Greek parents. He spent most of his youth in Dublin where his love of myth and fairy tales was born. He moved to Japan when he was 40. He spent the last 14 years of his life there, where he married a Japanese woman and became a naturalised Japanese citizen. He was dedicated to introducing Japan to the rest of the world, especially its rich tradition of story-telling and fairy tales. He wrote many books on the subject. Interwoven with the dramatisation of Hearn's life are a series of traditional Japanese folktales that he asks his wife to tell him. They offer the audience a glimpse of Japan that Hearn felt was dying out all too rapidly.
