In the Land of Poverty/The Visitor - T561899584This year the University of Wales, Newport presents two short plays by Creative Writing. Students in their annual season of best new writing. You’ll see both plays in one evening. In the Land of Poverty - Pete, Nicky, Slimer and Little Johnny are typical under-16s... they harass the elderly, steal from off-licences, get stoned and brag about sex. You might cross the road to avoid them if they hung out on your street corner, but this provocative new play reveals that beneath their masks of anti-social attitudes these boys are vulnerable and frightened children. The Visitor - Tony is a content young man. He has his own home, a steady job, a fiancee whom he loves and a close friend as his lodger. His security is threatened however by the arrival of an unwelcome visitor. Initially seeming benign and respectable, the visitor starts to introduce doubts into Tony’s mind about his lodger. Is his lodger after his home and his job? Is he a rival for the affections of his fiancee? Warning: features strong language and adult themesAuthor Jemma Smith (In the Land of Poverty). Director Richard Redman (In the Land of Poverty). Author Martyn Caira (The Visitor). Director Vanessa Dodd (The Visitor). | |
