In March 2000 the Royal Court Theatre made its first trip to Brazil with the support of the British Council. Since then Royal Court playwrights and directors have travelled to Sao Paulo and Salvador five times to work with emerging playwrights in both cities. Now, in specially commissioned translations, rehearsed readings of five new plays that have been developed as part of this on-going collaboration are presented. The week will include a Seminar on New Brazilian Writing. Other events include live Brazilian music and samba classes. As Brazil celebrates the beginning of a new political era, which reflects an impatience for change, these five plays explore a range of subjects which include domestic violence, the economy, land ownership and urban environment.
