Henry Scrubb has been out of work for months and is desperate for money. He replies to a newspaper advert offering a "big financial reward" only to discover that the advertiser, Mr Franklyn, is looking for someone to commit a murder. Naturally Henry refuses. But then the murder happens, and Henry is in trouble - up to his neck!
