Shakespeare stripped-back. No set. No props. No costumes. The actors. The words. The story. "The play's the thing". Led by Artistic Director Scott Ellis, The Merely Players have developed an impressive reputation for impeccable text work and pacey storytelling. The unique style, honed in acclaimed productions of Henry V, A Midsummer Night's Dream and Hamlet, now leads to its biggest challenge yet: Merely Shakespeare. A core company of twenty actors will perform a different Shakespeare play each month for one night only, at The Cockpit. Already this year the company have produced extremely successful performances of The Comedy of Errors, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Henry IV Part 1, As You Like It and Twelfth Night. This month sees guest director Neil Sheppeck take control of the company. The Merely Shakespeare Company has been created to bring energy and vitality to performances of Shakespeare's plays in such a way that puts the text first.
