Life's a Dream
Work:: Life's a Dream (S01705412056)
The play grapples the questions of pre-destination, astrology and man's free will in a moving tale of love, honour and revenge.
Life's a Dream was published in 1636 or 1637 before Calderon was forty. It is probable that this play had been presented on the Madrid stage before that date as plays in the 17th century tended to be written for immediate production. A young Woman, travelling through a wild and mountainous region, discovers a Prince who has been imprisoned by his father since birth, to foil a prophecy that he will bring disaster to the world and death to the King. Prompted by the Woman, the King is overcome with remorse and sets his son free, giving him the chance to prove his good character.
