Lady Gregory archiveLady Augusta Gregory (15th March 1852 - 22nd May 1932) was born into an Anglo-Irish, land-owning family. Despite her English aristocratic background she became very interested in Irish politics, Irish culture and the social conditions of life for the workers on the family estate. Her interest in Irish folklore brought her into contact with writers such as JM Synge, GB Shaw and Sean O'Casey. She also numbered WB Yeats among her close friends and it was with him that she had the idea of forming a National Theatre for Ireland.
