La Venexiana
Work:: La Venexiana (S715922430)
Iulius, a young man from Milan, arrives in Venice, attracts the attention of Angela, a wealthy but bored widow, and discovers mutual temptation with Valeria, a beautiful but newly married woman. There quickly ensues a frantic quest on the part of both women to consolidate their uncontrollable lust. While both women experience the fulfilment of their desires, there remains something far deeper in the emotional aftermath than the momentary and boundless pleasure he seemed to personify. Dating from the mid-1500's,
La Venexiana was rediscovered inside a manuscript in a library in the 1920s. The playwright's name was missing from the front page, hence the anonymous writer credit, the pages of the script had to be chemically recovered having faded over the centuries. It was quickly produced, immediately being hailed as a classic, and has gone on to become one of the cardinal points of reference in Italian theatre, both for the use of language and for its acute rendering of a society and its manners. It has also been made into a motion picture.
